Silence, Please for "Silents, Please! STL"

There is something about a silent film that will leave you speechless. And, that’s why St. Louisan Kate Bellows Stewart started Silents, Please! STL. This organization works to “promote and preserve Silent Cinema in the
Metro St. Louis Region”. According to Stewart herself, her personal goal for this project is to “make the experience less daunting, more inviting, and (frankly) more fun!”

How can you get in on this fun? Join Silents, Please! for their December showing of City Lights (1931) starring Charlie Chaplin and Sherlock, Jr. (1924) starring Buster Keaton at Marcus Des Peres Cinema on Tuesday, 12/14 at 7pm. Buy your tickets here: https://silents-please-stl.square.site/.

Despite being filmed almost 100 years ago, silent films still resonate with audiences today. With themes of love, connection, and being seen, City Lights and Sherlock, Jr. are on our must-watch list. Still not fully convinced you can sit in silence for an hour? A final thought on silent films from Stewart: “Silents allow our own perceptions, associations, wishes, and dreams to fill the space… it asks more of us and brings more of our unique subjectivity and empathy into the experience.”

In person experiences - silent or not - are in high demand! For more events, adventures, celebrations, and reasons to engage in our St. Louis community, get a copy of SL or sign up for our online newsletter: https://www.sophisticatedstlouis.com/mag/subscribe.
