Remembering with Flags of Valor

One of the most striking visuals you will see this year is over 7, 000 American flags standing tall, placed equidistantly on Art Hill. As you look closer, you will see that each flag is adorned with a photograph and dog tag of a fallen hero in the War on Terror. On this 20th anniversary of 9/11, Flags of Valor’s memorial is solemn yet inspires us to remember forever.

First established in 2011, Flags of Valor installs this memorial every 5 years. It began as a way to honor the victims and first responders of September 11th and now remembers all of the heroes who have given their lives in the War on Terror. This year’s memorial event began on September 4th and will remain in place until September 12th. All ages are welcome to gather and remember. In the words of the organization: “As we stand motionless, we hear the whisper of our country’s flags waving gently in the wind. The clinking of dog tags asking to be read, to be remembered.”

Beyond this event, the parent organization America’s Heartland Remembers has committed to remembering fallen heroes in other ways, as well. This includes placing flags at churches and funeral homes when veterans pass away and assisting in the planning and construction of veteran memorials. In big displays and smaller ways, America’s Heartland Remembers is proud to honor the lives of America’s heroes, as we all should be. Flags of Valor at Art Hill is a humbling way for us all to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The memorial goes beyond never forgetting. Instead, the goal is to remember forever.
